Ethiopia Night, From Kakuma to UBC, was a wonderful evening of food, conversation and shared stories hosted by the Outreach and Refugee committees in support of our refugee program.
We celebrated the end of exams for Tekle and Rebecca
and the first birthday of a special guest, too.

Nearly 100 people gathered in the gym where posters of information, photographs and colourful fabrics were on display. We were greeted and entertained during the evening by our enthusiastic drummers and percussionists.
Sabina hosted the evening, Rev. Brenda welcomed all with a prayer, and Maggie talked about the 20-year history of Dunbar's refugee program. Tekle talked about his experiences in Ethiopia, Kenya and Canada.

In so many cultures, hospitality centers around food and storytelling. This evening was a wonderful expression of hospitality. In the kitchen Tekle sliced the colourful bread as enthusiastic watchers gazed on; then we all feasted.

Throughout the evening, friends from Vancouver's Ethiopian community prepared food and remained in the kitchen to clean up. Leenane was allowed to help briefly, but even she was dismissed to enjoy the festivities.

To wrap up the evening: a cake with sparklers to celebrate the end of exams; a one-candle cake to mark a birthday
and a demonstration of the hospitality of coffee.
