"We are nurtured and challenged by the presence of the Spirit
to find depth and meaning for our lives and
to engage our neighbourhood near and far in living lives of justice."

There is a deep committment to spiritual growth for all ages at Dunbar Heights.

Preaching and prayer, music and celebration are central to worship. Worship is led by an Ordained Minister and a Designated Lay Ministers of the the United Church of Canada most Sundays with congregation members and guests preaching as needed.

Children have a special place in worship at Dunbar and a special corner just for them during the early part of the service. Parents and care givers can be with them and there are materials for busy hands as they listen to the service.

The special theme time for children engages young minds and imaginations in the stories of the Bible. There is attentive care for babies and toddlers, and Sunday classes for pre-schoolers through to high school students led by dedicated, caring teachers. Cathy Cryder is Designated Lay Minister for the ministry with children, youth and families.

Spiritual Development for Adults

Disciple Bible Study

DISCIPLE is an approach to Bible study that emphasizes reading of and listening to Scripture. It results in biblically-nourished persons committed to live as disciples. During the course of 34 weeks, DISCIPLE groups move through the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. All DISCIPLE Bible study participants will read more than 70% of the Bible. DISCIPLE study is undertaken every second or third year.

Prayer and Healing

Dunbar has groups of members trained in the practice of both Centering Prayer and Healing Touch. For more information, go here for Centering Prayer; here for Healing Touch.

Dunbar Deepening

Building on a long tradition of Christian Education, a two-year initiative started in 2005 — a small group of new and long-time members began thinking about new directions for Christian Spiritual Development related to the resources and needs of our Dunbar family. For more information about that process, click here.

The Library

Don't know much about history? Don't know much theology?
Don't know much about the Holy Book? Don't know much about the Pentateuch?

The newly decorated, newly organized DHUC Library is a comfortable place to explore questions, find answers, and think of more questions. It's one more way that we support the Spritual Growth of members. The library is to the right, immediately inside the Office door on W24th Avenue.

The collection includes:
  • Books by historic and contemporary theologians
  • Books on Christian history
  • Various translations and editions of the Bible
  • Atlases, dictionaries and encyclopedias of the Bible
  • Study and devotional material
  • Literary works that have a religious theme
  • Children's books of Bible stories
  • Self-help books with a spiritual approach
  • Meg Hicklings collection on a Christian approach to sex
